According to Reuters, Meta Platforms plans to start production of its self-developed AI chip, codenamed "Iris," as early as September. An internal memo shows that the chip is part of Meta's internal MTIA accelerator project, aimed at boosting AI performance on platforms like Facebook and Instagram while reducing reliance on third-party chip suppliers such as Nvidia and AMD. Testing of the Iris chip progressed rapidly, taking only six weeks with no major issues. Meta will produce the chip through a collaboration with Broadcom for design and TSMC for manufacturing. In addition, Meta is aggressively expanding its computing infrastructure, planning to deploy 7 GW of computing power by 2026 and double it to 14 GW by 2027. To support this expansion, Meta has signed long-term supply agreements with Samsung Electronics, Sandisk, and Sumitomo Electric for memory, flash storage, and optical fiber equipment.
