Argentina staged a 'concede three, chase two' comeback, the whole game made my heart race.
After watching football for so many years, what I fear most in knockout matches is conceding early. And Argentina went from 0-2 to 3-2, my heart almost stopped in between.
The first match of the quarterfinals: France vs Morocco.
France's strength is exactly Morocco's weakness. What does a three-center-back system fear most? It fears opponents with fast wingers who stretch the width, and France happens to have two—Mbappé and Dembélé on each side. Morocco's wing-backs will be pinned deep, not daring to push forward easily. In the previous round, Morocco kept a clean sheet not only because of their solid defense, but also because their opponents didn't have that level of wide attacking threat.
But France has one obvious problem: their build-up from midfield and defense relies on Griezmann dropping deep to receive the ball. If Morocco uses a defensive midfielder to man-mark Griezmann, France's progression will become awkward. Morocco's winning logic is clear: high-intensity pressing in the first 20 minutes, try to grab an early goal, then sit back and counter-attack. If the first half ends 0-0, France's patience will be worn down, and there will be room for an upset in the second half.
The key is whether France can score first. If they do, the match enters France's rhythm; Morocco will push out and leave more gaps in defense. If not, the longer it drags on, the more dangerous it becomes for France.
2-0 / 2-1 / 1-1 (France advances after extra time)
To be honest, by the quarterfinals, the scripts are getting harder to predict, but that's also when the World Cup is at its most exciting.
