On July 7, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning hosted a regular press conference. A reporter from Venezuela’s TeleSur asked how the earthquake in Venezuela poses a dual challenge to the country: on the one hand, it needs to work outdoors to save lives and provide assistance to affected people; on the other hand, it still faces difficulties in funding humanitarian operations, making international financial transfers, and importing essential supplies. The United States announced a temporary easing of some sanctions to facilitate humanitarian aid, but other restrictions and measures to freeze Venezuelan assets remain in effect. How does China assess the impact of these measures on rescue, recovery, and reconstruction efforts? Mao Ning said that China has consistently opposed illegal unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law, and that it calls on the United States to lift its illegal unilateral sanctions against Venezuela as soon as possible, in order to create favorable conditions for Venezuela’s post-disaster reconstruction.
