The United Nations Development Programme and the World Health Organization warned on June 30 that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is spreading faster than the response capacity, potentially causing broader socio-economic shocks. The WHO Regional Office for Africa's latest report released the same day showed that the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola virus in the DRC remains "active," with ongoing transmission in multiple areas, and the overall response is "still below the level needed to rapidly interrupt transmission." An assessment report released by the UNDP in Kinshasa on the same day warned that the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is triggering a far-reaching socio-economic crisis that could push 985k people into poverty. If the outbreak impact further intensifies, the African economy could suffer losses of up to $3.6 billion. (Xinhua)
