Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is visiting Europe, met separately with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Oslo on Monday (6th) and held talks with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide. After the talks, Støre said in an interview that China may be the most direct and effective country in communicating with the Russian leadership, and he expects and strongly urges China to make good use of this channel.

According to Reuters, Støre said that most of the discussions focused on the Ukraine issue. He said there is potential for deepening cooperation between Europe and China, but as long as the war continues and as long as China remains a close partner of Russia, those opportunities will be limited.

Eide, meanwhile, described the dialogue with China on ending the Russia-Ukraine war as "constructive and hopeful." Asked whether China had indicated it would push Russia back to the negotiating table, he said, "I am not China's spokesperson, I will not quote them, but there are some hints in their remarks."

Norwegian Foreign Minister says positions close to China on multiple hot topics

According to a statement on the Chinese Foreign Ministry website, during talks with Eide, Wang Yi pointed out that Norway was one of the first Western countries to recognize New China, and bilateral political trust continues to strengthen. Mutually beneficial cooperation is expanding in depth, substance, green development, and innovation. The China-Norway green transition dialogue mechanism has become an important platform for cooperation. He proposed that both sides should enhance bilateral trade levels, sign a China-Norway free trade agreement as soon as possible, and deepen cooperation in clean energy, electric vehicles, green shipping, circular economy, etc., with a focus on implementing the green transition dialogue mechanism.

China quoted Eide as responding that Norway firmly adheres to the One-China policy and is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges and dialogues at all levels with China, promote practical cooperation in trade, green economy, oceans, and other fields. He emphasized that Norway consistently supports free trade and opposes the securitization of economic issues.

He also said that Norway and China have similar positions on many international and regional hot topics. Norway values China's important influence in international affairs and is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China, uphold the central role of the United Nations, defend basic norms of international relations, actively address global challenges such as climate change, and jointly protect the only planet on which humanity lives.

The two sides also had an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis and the Middle East situation.
