Don't underestimate Argentina. What matters most for a championship team is winning when it counts.
As the World Cup reaches the quarterfinals, many people are starting to reconsider their picks for the champion. Some support France, others favor Spain, but I still choose to believe in Argentina.
The reason is simple: the World Cup winner isn't necessarily the most entertaining team to watch, but it's often the team that knows how to win.
Argentina hasn't blown out opponents by huge margins along the way, but in almost every game, they've found a way to solve problems at critical moments. The team has rich big-game experience and strong mental toughness. In the knockout stages, this kind of advantage often matters more than individual skill.
Compared to France, which emphasizes overall balance, Argentina's biggest strength is its exceptional game-reading ability. Whether leading or trailing, they know how to adjust the tempo. Many teams tend to panic in the closing stages, but Argentina is the opposite—the more crucial the moment, the calmer they become.
Switzerland will be their next test. Although Switzerland is slightly inferior overall, they have a tight defensive organization and a decent counter-attacking efficiency. If Argentina can successfully get through this hurdle, their confidence will only grow further.
History has proven time and again that winning the World Cup requires a certain amount of luck, but even more so, it requires a champion's mindset. Argentina has a rich tournament pedigree, and this intangible advantage often shows in crucial matches.
I believe that although Argentina is not the top favorite right now, they still have about 15% to 20% chance of winning the title. If they reach the final, they won't be at a disadvantage against any opponent.
As the World Cup progresses further, it's not just tactics and technique that are tested, but also willpower. And in that regard, Argentina has always been one of the most competitive teams in world football.
