Abstract generation in progress
According to disclosure documents on the website of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), SpaceX has formally applied this week for FCC approval to launch and operate a third-generation (Gen3) satellite constellation consisting of 100k satellites.
The third-generation constellation will consist of 100k satellites, deployed in two sets of thin, tightly stacked operational orbital shells with nominal altitudes between 323 and 327.5 kilometers, and between 473 and 477.5 kilometers, respectively.
When the deployment scale reaches 100k satellites, this system will no longer be a "satellite internet" connecting remote areas and in-flight Wi-Fi, but a global communication backbone for the AI era.
SpaceX describes the third-generation constellation as "a powerful, resilient, and ubiquitous communications infrastructure" with "the capacity to carry most of the world's internet traffic," providing ultra-low latency, multi-gigabit symmetric uplink and downlink throughput for global government users, enterprises, consumers, and billions of AI-driven devices.
