Wong Kam-fai involved in drunk driving and was arrested | Legislative Council Supervisory Committee: Understands the public’s concern about the incident and will handle it strictly in accordance with the Code for Members
Legislative Council member Wong Kam-fai was arrested on Monday (June 29) evening on suspicion of four offenses including drunk driving, and was released on bail pending investigation. The Legislative Council Monitoring Committee stated tonight (July 2) that it understands the public is very concerned about this incident and will handle cases involving members' conduct seriously and strictly in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Legislative Council Members.
It is understood that the 66-year-old Wong Kam-fai was involved in a drunk driving incident at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on Monday evening, hitting two cars and then fleeing the scene. Sources say that after police arrived, Wong Kam-fai later returned to the scene but failed a breathalyzer test. Police arrested him on suspicion of "drunk driving" and the case is being treated as "careless driving," "failing to stop after a traffic accident," "failing to report a traffic accident," and "drunk driving." He was released on bail pending further investigation and must report to the police in late July.
Three days later, the Legislative Council Monitoring Committee responded at over 7 p.m. today (2nd), saying:
The Legislative Council Monitoring Committee has always attached great importance to the conduct of members and understands that the public is very concerned about this incident. The committee will handle cases involving members' conduct seriously and strictly in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Legislative Council Members.

Legislative Council Monitoring Committee Deputy Chairman Chan Chun-ying was asked by reporters about the incident while attending an event this afternoon. He said that the Monitoring Committee has only one spokesperson, which is the President of the Legislative Council, and asked the media to direct inquiries to the Legislative Council President. When further pressed on what the Legislative Council President thinks and when Wong Kam-fai will explain, he said he had no further comment.
