July 7 news reports that the South Korean government is considering extending a GPU guarantee support program for AI core resources. On July 7, according to industry sources, the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea is investigating major South Korean cloud service providers’ capacity to build additional GPUs, with the goal of extending the “AI Computing Resource Utilization Foundation Reinforcement Project.” The core of the program is that the government allocates a budget to purchase GPUs, deploys them in the data centers of cloud service providers, and supports their use by industry, academia, and research organizations. Last year, the South Korean government injected a budget on the order of 1 trillion won; this year, it has allocated 2 trillion won, guaranteeing more than 20,000 GPUs. The program was originally planned to end this year, but with a surge in demand for advanced resources such as NVIDIA’s next-generation GPU, Vera Rubin, the South Korean government is drawing up comprehensive countermeasures including optimizing data center efficiency and securing new space, and it is reportedly applying to the Planning and Budget Office for a “limit-extra budget” for GPU guarantees. Industry estimates suggest that, taking this year’s GPU guarantee budget and the government’s intentions into account, next year’s budget could be as high as around 4 trillion won. Industry views say that, compared with GPU supply itself, “equipment installation space” will be the key factor determining the program’s success, because running thousands of high-performance GPUs at the same time requires substantial power supply and advanced cooling systems, and the equipment installation space held by South Korean companies is already nearing saturation.
