Egypt’s tactic — defend for 90 minutes, waiting for a Salah moment of brilliance

Egypt’s tactic is very clear: defend and counterattack, waiting for Salah.

Against Argentina, Egypt will likely set up in a 5-4-1 formation, with everyone retreating into the 30-meter area. Salah, as the lone forward, stays up front, waiting for a chance to hit on the counter. Ashour and Trezeguet provide pace support on both wings, while Marmoush is ready to be brought on at any time to challenge Argentina’s defensive line.

Although Egypt’s defensive line is limited in individual ability, they show extremely strong tactical discipline. In the group stage, they conceded only 1 goal against Belgium, and they also conceded only 1 goal against Iran. Argentina’s attack is powerful, but against this extreme “everyone defending” tactic, they could easily find themselves in a tough struggle as well.

Egypt’s goalkeeper, El Shenawy, will be crucial. If he can perform like a god against Argentina the way the Cape Verde goalkeeper did, Egypt will have a chance to drag the match into extra time—and even take it to a penalty shootout. Egypt have already eliminated Australia via a penalty shootout in the 1/16 final, so they lack neither the experience nor the confidence in penalty shootouts.
