Historical encounters—Argentina has won all, but they are all "ancient data"
Argentina and Egypt have faced each other twice in history. The first time was at the 1928 Olympics, where Argentina defeated Egypt 6-0. The second was in a friendly in 2008, where Argentina won 2-0 thanks to goals from Agüero and Burdisso. Messi did not play in that match.
Historical data has limited reference value. The 1928 Olympics and the 2008 friendly are completely different from today's World Cup knockout matches. The tactical systems and personnel compositions of both teams have long been completely transformed.
More importantly, this is the first-ever meeting between Argentina and Egypt in World Cup history. Without the historical baggage of previous World Cup encounters, without psychological disadvantage, whoever is in better form and executes their tactics more effectively will have a better chance of advancing.
Argentina has often had a tough time in World Cup round of 16 matches—except for a 3-1 victory over Mexico in 2010, their other round of 16 results are 6 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses, with all 6 wins by a single goal. Egypt's defensive resilience could drag Argentina into another hard-fought battle.
