Wow, China is beginning to consider restricting overseas use of its top domestic AI models.


The Ministry of Commerce recently held closed-door meetings to consider restricting overseas access to our cutting-edge AI models, including both unreleased models and open-source ones that are under discussion.
Over the past month, China’s Ministry of Commerce has led closed-door meetings with major AI companies such as Alibaba and ByteDance and , officially discussing management measures to restrict overseas access to cutting-edge AI models within the country.
The scope of this regulatory discussion covers not only proprietary closed-source models, but for the first time also brings unreleased models and open-source weight models into the debate.
At present, the applicability boundaries of the final rules are still being discussed, and the current tendency is to place the focus of restrictions on future high-performance frontier models.
