In 1981, on the New York City subway, a young Chinese-American woman dressed fashionably and looking down at her book stood out from the surroundings in the carriage.



Her name was Zhao Xiaolan, who would later become the first female U.S. Cabinet Secretary and the 18th U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
