Incheon Airport Tops 1 Billion Passengers
Incheon International Airport has set a milestone by surpassing 1 billion cumulative passengers in the shortest period among competing airports worldwide. This is an achievement accomplished 25 years since its opening.
Incheon International Airport Corporation held the ‘Commemorative Event for Achieving 1 Billion Cumulative Passengers’ at Terminal 2 of Incheon Airport on July 7. The total time it took for Incheon Airport, which opened on March 29, 2001, to reach the 1 billion mark is 25 years and 3 months (9,232 days). This is an overwhelming speed even when compared to major overseas competing airports. It was found that reaching 1 billion cumulative passengers took 33 years and 10 months for Munich Airport in Germany, 35 years and 5 months for Changi Airport in Singapore, 39 years and 2 months for Narita Airport in Japan, and 58 years and 2 months for Dubai Airport in the United Arab Emirates.
The 1 billion cumulative passengers figure is equivalent to 1 out of 8 people worldwide having used Incheon Airport, and it matches about 19 visits per person for the South Korean population. After achieving 100 million cumulative passengers in October 2005 following its opening, Incheon Airport has maintained a steep growth trend, excluding the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, it took only 10 years to go from 500 million to 1 billion passengers, showing an accelerating trend in the rate of passenger increase.
Looking at the performance by route, passengers on Japanese routes were the highest at 204.79 million, followed by China (185.37 million) and the United States (86.10 million). By city, the Incheon-Narita route took first place with 60.74 million passengers, while the Hong Kong and Kansai routes also recorded high utilization rates. By airline, the national flag carrier Korean Air recorded the maximum number of passengers by carrying 309.15 million, followed by Asiana Airlines and Jeju Air.
This growth of Incheon Airport is the result of proactive infrastructure expansion combined with the government’s consistent hub policy. The corporation established the world’s third-largest infrastructure capable of accommodating 106 million passengers annually by completing the phase 4 construction project in November 2024. It is evaluated as having presented a successful national project model by financing 82% of the total project cost of 18.017 trillion won ($13.86 billion) with the corporation’s own funds.
Qualitative growth is also prominent. Incheon Airport has maintained world-class service by ranking first in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) for 12 consecutive years and obtaining the highest level of customer experience accreditation for 4 consecutive years. Furthermore, based on accumulated operational know-how, it is taking the lead in the export of the ‘K-Airport’ by securing 42 overseas projects in 18 countries worldwide. In the air cargo sector, it has secured the world’s third-largest competitiveness, playing the role of an economic gateway that processes 99% of semiconductor exports, which are key national strategic assets.
Kim Bum-ho, Acting President of Incheon International Airport Corporation, emphasized, “Thanks to the support of the government, the encouragement of the citizens, and the hard work of over 94,000 resident employees, we were able to grow into a world-class airport,” and added, “We will continue to contribute to the development of the national aviation industry through continuous facility investment and service innovation in the future.”
