Odaily Planet Daily News: The South Korean government is considering extending the GPU guarantee support program for core AI resources. On July 7, according to related industry sources, the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT is investigating major cloud service providers’ capability to build additional GPUs in South Korea, with the goal of extending the “AI Computing Resource Utilization Infrastructure Enhancement Project.” The core of the program is that the government invests a budget to purchase GPUs, deploys them in cloud service providers’ data centers, and supports their use by industry, academia, and research and development. Last year, the South Korean government allocated a budget on the order of 1 trillion won, and this year it allocated 2 trillion won, ensuring support for more than 20,000 GPUs. The program was originally planned to end this year, but with a surge in demand for advanced resources such as Nvidia’s next-generation GPU Vera Rubin, the South Korean government is formulating comprehensive countermeasures, including data center efficiency optimization and plans to secure new space, and it is reportedly already applying to the Budget Office for an “additional budget allocation limit” for GPU guarantees. Industry estimates suggest that, considering this year’s GPU guarantee budget and the government’s willingness, next year’s budget could be up to approximately 4 trillion won. Industry views point out that, compared with the availability of GPUs themselves, “equipment installation space” will be the key factor determining the success or failure of the program, because running thousands of high-performance GPUs at the same time requires a large power supply and advanced cooling systems, while the equipment installation space held by South Korean companies is already close to saturation.
