Incheon International Airport has set a landmark record among competing airports worldwide by surpassing 1 billion cumulative passengers in the shortest time. This achievement was made 25 years after the airport opened.

On the 7th, Incheon International Airport Corporation held a “Cumulative Passenger 1 Billion Achievement Ceremony” at Terminal 2 of Incheon Airport. Incheon Airport, which opened on March 29, 2001, took a total of 25 years and 3 months (9232 days) to reach the milestone of 1 billion passengers. This is an overwhelming speed even when compared with major overseas airports in competitive relationships. The data shows that to reach 1 billion cumulative passengers, Germany’s Munich Airport took 33 years and 10 months, Singapore’s Changi Airport took 35 years and 5 months, Japan’s Narita Airport took 39 years and 2 months, and the United Arab Emirates’ Dubai Airport took 58 years and 2 months.

Reaching 1 billion cumulative passengers means that 1 out of every 8 people worldwide has used Incheon Airport, which is equivalent to about 19 visits per person in the Republic of Korea. Since opening, after achieving 100 million cumulative passengers in October 2005, Incheon Airport has maintained a steep growth trajectory except during the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, it took only 10 years to go from 500 million to 1 billion, indicating that the pace of passenger growth is accelerating even further.

Looking at performance by route, Japanese routes had the largest number of users with 204.79 million passengers, followed by China (185.37 million) and the United States (86.10 million). By city, the Incheon–Narita route ranked first with 60.74 million passengers, and the Hong Kong and Kansai routes also recorded high utilization rates. By airline, the national carrier Korean Air carried the most passengers with 309.15 million, followed by Asiana Airlines and Jeju Air, according to the analysis.

This kind of growth at Incheon Airport is the result of proactive infrastructure expansion combined with the government’s consistent hub-focused policy. The corporation completed its Phase 4 construction project in November 2024, building infrastructure on the world’s third-largest scale that can accommodate 106 million passengers per year. Among the total project cost of 18 trillion 170 billion won, 82% was financed from the corporation’s own funds, and it is assessed as providing a successful model for national policy-based projects.

Quality-driven growth is also notable. Incheon Airport ranked first in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) evaluation for 12 consecutive years, and after that, it also obtained the highest grade in the Customer Experience Certification for four consecutive years, maintaining world-class service levels. In addition, based on its accumulated operational know-how, it has won 42 overseas projects in 18 countries worldwide, leading efforts in exporting “K-airport.” In the air cargo sector as well, it has secured the competitiveness of ranking third globally, functioning as an economic gateway that processes 99% of semiconductor exports, which are a key national strategic asset.

Kim Beom-ho, Acting President of Incheon International Airport Corporation, said, “Thanks to government support, the encouragement of the public, and the hard work of more than 94,000 resident employees, we were able to grow into a world-class airport,” and emphasized, “Going forward, we will continue to contribute to the development of the national aviation industry through ongoing facility investment and service innovation.”
