Cosmax Earns Top SPF Proficiency Rating

Cosmax announced on July 7 that it obtained the highest grade of ‘Satisfactory’ in the SPF proficiency evaluation organized by the French proficiency testing organization BIPEA (Bureau Interprofessionnel d’Etudes Analytiques).

This evaluation was conducted based on the latest international standard test method ‘ISO 23675’ established in December 2024, and Cosmax accurately derived the sun protection factor of blind samples for which no information was provided.

ISO 23675, the core of this evaluation, is an in vitro non-clinical evaluation method that measures the absorption and transmission characteristics of ultraviolet rays using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) plates in a laboratory. It is characterized by using an automatic application device equipped with a robotic arm to reduce individual errors among researchers and maximize the consistency and reproducibility of the test.

This method has the advantage of significantly shortening the evaluation period compared to the existing human application test method (ISO 24444). As a non-clinical method that does not directly irradiate ultraviolet rays onto the skin, it is free from ethical controversies and enables rapid efficacy verification in the early stages of product development.

Since preemptively introducing the ISO 23675 evaluation method in February of this year, Cosmax has continuously expanded its related research and development infrastructure. In particular, as the number of domestic and foreign client companies hoping to enter the European market has surged recently, the company is reorganizing the entire process from product planning to prescription development and efficacy evaluation to meet global standards.

The global sun care market is trending toward a phase where texture, safety, and response to strict regulations of each country, beyond simple blocking functions, are emerging as core competitive edges. Based on the evaluation capability proven this time, Cosmax plans to enhance the reliability of client companies’ product development while further expanding the global presence of K-sun care.

A Cosmax official emphasized, “This result is a meaningful achievement that once again externally confirms Cosmax’s sun care research and development and evaluation capabilities,” adding, “We will continuously advance our differentiated technological prowess and evaluation systems so that client companies can agilely respond to the rapidly changing global market environment.”
