Frontline stalemate, deep-strike exchanges — Military experts analyze the high-intensity Russia-Ukraine clashes

Xinhua News Agency, July 6 - In recent days, Russia and Ukraine have been caught in a "spiral of retaliation," with the intensity of confrontation continuing to escalate. The Russian Defense Ministry said on social media on the 6th that the Russian military launched intensive strikes on multiple locations in Ukraine that day in response to Ukraine's previous attacks on civilian facilities inside Russia.

Military experts believe that the Russian military's current core operational goal is to capture the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk urban cluster in the Donetsk region, while Ukraine mainly uses drones and other equipment to strike Russian energy targets, attempting to pressure Russia from the civilian level. In the short term, the Russia-Ukraine clashes will feature a pattern of front-line offensive and defensive stalemates and mutual long-range strikes on logistics targets.

Mutual Offense and Defense

In recent days, Russia and Ukraine have been in a state of high-intensity confrontation. On the front line, Russia has been steadily advancing ground positional warfare. Russian President Putin said on the 3rd that the Russian military is continuously accelerating its offensive along the entire front line, continuing to eliminate Ukrainian forces in the Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. The work of establishing security zones in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts is proceeding as planned.

On the same day, Putin also announced that Russian forces had made significant progress in Donetsk, taking control of the strategic military point of Kostiantynivka. Analysts believe that given the layered defensive system set up by Ukrainian forces in Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and other places, this Russian advance is of important strategic significance. However, the Ukrainian side said the next day that the Russian statement was not true and that Kostiantynivka remained under Ukrainian control.

Both sides have also intensified air strikes on each other's deep targets. Ukraine has launched large-scale drone strikes on Russia, with targets gradually expanding from military facilities to energy, communication infrastructure, as well as military production and logistics systems. For example, in June, Ukrainian forces used drones to strike multiple energy facilities deep inside Russia, including a natural gas refinery and a helium plant in Orenburg Oblast, which is more than 1,200 km from the front line.

Russia has also carried out air strikes on targets in Ukraine. According to Ukrainian sources, from the night of July 1 to the early morning of July 2, a total of 51 locations in Ukraine, including Kyiv, were hit by large-scale Russian missile and drone strikes. Russia said that in June, Russian forces launched five large-scale strikes on Ukraine, targeting production facilities for cruise missiles, medium- and long-range drones, robotic systems, electronic warfare equipment, military airfields, and energy and fuel facilities.

Different Considerations

Analysts point out that the simultaneous escalation of offensives by Russia and Ukraine recently is driven by multiple considerations, including seizing battlefield initiative and balancing domestic and foreign affairs.

From Ukraine's perspective, it is attempting to strike Russian infrastructure, logistics hubs, and military production targets, disrupt Russia's supply transport and energy support systems, raise Russia's war costs, and weaken its frontline combat capability. Ukraine has focused on attacking Russian oil and gas infrastructure, causing fuel supply shortages and energy price increases. Russian political analyst Sergei Strokan believes that Ukraine's move is aimed at magnifying the impact of the war on Russia's civilian life and weakening the Russian public's tolerance for the war.

In addition, Ukraine hopes to send a signal to the outside world through its current offensive, especially with the upcoming NATO summit. Ukrainian international affairs expert Maksym Yali believes that Ukraine intends to prove to Western countries that it still has sustained combat capability, thereby dispelling the doubts of some allies regarding military aid to Ukraine.

Russia, on the other hand, seeks to consolidate its battlefield initiative. The Russian Defense Ministry's recent combat weekly report shows that Russian armed forces have carried out several rounds of high-intensity strikes on Ukrainian military industrial facilities and other targets since the end of June. Russian military experts believe that such high-intensity strikes have been rare in recent years, demonstrating Russia's capability and determination to advance military operations.

Analysts also point out that against the backdrop of rising unease in Russia caused by Ukrainian drone attacks, Russia hopes to send a signal to its domestic audience through its sustained offensive that the battlefield situation remains under control.

Stalemate Continues

According to the Russian presidential website, Russian forces will continue to advance on multiple fronts. Its Eastern Group of Forces is advancing westward along a broad front in eastern Zaporizhzhia region; the Northern Group of Forces is expanding "security zones" in Ukraine's Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts; the Central Group of Forces is advancing north of the Donetsk region's key town of Krasnoarmiysk (called Pokrovsk by Ukraine) and is contesting the important stronghold of Novopavlivka village on the defensive line in that area.

Ukraine, on the other hand, is focusing on the defense of towns in the Donetsk region, including Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and Druzhkivka.

Ukrainian military experts and media believe that Kostiantynivka is particularly important for Ukraine's overall defense in the Donetsk region; if this pivot point is completely lost, it will greatly affect the defensive situation on the entire Kramatorsk front. Ukrainian military commentator Oleksandr Kovalenko believes that Ukraine's main combat goal in the Kostiantynivka direction is to deplete Russian manpower and equipment as much as possible, and the stalemate there will continue until the end of summer.

The Russian Baltic News Agency reported that given the continued Western support for Ukrainian unmanned systems operations, the scale of Ukrainian drone attacks on targets inside Russia may expand. In addition, the risk of attacks on transportation and infrastructure such as bridges and ports in Crimea will also increase.

Ukrainian military expert Oleh Zhdanov said that in addition to front-line positional battles, disrupting the opponent's logistics supply system in both the front and rear has become the focus of the current stage of Russia-Ukraine confrontation. The intensity of attacks on each other's transportation hubs, equipment depots, and energy facilities will continue to increase. Whether they can effectively paralyze the opponent's logistics supply system may affect the course of the war and even the negotiation process.
