ByteDance and Alibaba shut down the custom functions of the large model "AI Companion".

On July 6, large model applications such as ByteDance's Doubao, Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen, and Tencent's Yuanbao are successively shutting down or adjusting their custom 'AI Companion' features. Doubao has notified users that it will remove the custom character function on July 15, and guide users with needs to a standalone companion application. This move is aimed at responding to China's new generative AI regulations that will take effect in mid-July. The new regulations, promoted by the Cyberspace Administration of China, focus on preventing negative impacts that may arise from anthropomorphic AI services. The new regulations explicitly prohibit platforms from generating content that may incite extreme emotions in minors, prohibit inducing users to develop pathological emotional dependence that erodes real-world social interaction, and stipulate that providers must not use sensitive user conversation data to train future large models. Compared to the proactive compliance actions in China, virtual companion applications in the United States are facing greater legal pressure. Both OpenAI and Character.AI are mired in a series of lawsuits, accused of inducing dangerous emotional dependence and even leading to extreme tragedies. In addition to software applications, the China Robot Industry Association has also begun to promote the establishment of norms for physical companion robots and humanoid robots.
