CertiK just released the first half of 2026 security report: Stolen funds dropped 47% year-on-year, but don't relax too soon. Losses in the second quarter surged 59% quarter-on-quarter, with over 70% coming from two attacks believed to be carried out by North Korean hackers. More alarmingly, the number of security incidents doubled from 83 to 207, hitting an all-time high.

Private key management and multi-signature wallets remain the biggest weaknesses. The decline in attack frequency may be due to a concentration on high-value targets rather than stronger defenses. The lessons from KelpDAO and Drift Protocol show that a single point of breakthrough can cause hundreds of millions in losses, and such attacks are almost impossible for ordinary users to prevent.
Security is often overlooked during market rebounds. But history has repeatedly proven that hackers never take a holiday. If DeFi is to truly go mainstream, security must shift from "post-mortem remediation" to "proactive design." Otherwise, the optimism of every rebound could be extinguished by the next attack.
