Balogun red card suspension postponed? Belgian FA furious!
On the morning of July 7, Beijing time, the USA-Mexico-Canada World Cup will host the Round of 16 match between host USA and Belgium in Seattle.
However, just one day before the match, FIFA suddenly issued a notice postponing US striker Balogun's red card suspension, meaning the forward, who was sent off for a dangerous stamping motion in the previous match against Bosnia, is now eligible to play. This unprecedented ruling, since the introduction of the red and yellow card system in 1970, has sparked a global storm of controversy in football.
Belgian coach Garcia slammed the decision at the pre-match press conference, saying it violates the basic principles of football fairness and accusing FIFA of arbitrarily interpreting rules, which will set a disastrous precedent for world football.
Political interference leads to a “suspended sentence” for a red card
In the previous match where the USA beat Bosnia 2-0, Balogun scored the team's first goal, but in the 64th minute, he stamped heavily on the opponent defender's ankle. After VAR review, the referee directly showed him a red card.
According to the unified World Cup competition rules, a player shown a red card automatically misses the next knockout match. This standard applies to all players sent off in this tournament, and everyone assumed Balogun would miss the crucial match against Belgium.
However, just 24 hours before the match, FIFA suddenly issued a statement citing Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, announcing that Balogun's one-match automatic suspension would be deferred for one year. A one-year probation period was set; if he commits no similar serious foul within that year, the suspension would be nullified.
The official statement provided no reasonable basis for overturning the red card decision or deferring the suspension, relying solely on this catch-all clause, which has no clear applicable standards and gives FIFA full discretion.
It was soon revealed that US President Donald Trump had specifically called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun's red card.
After FIFA's announcement, Trump immediately posted on social media praising FIFA for "correcting an injustice and making a fair decision." This blatant political interference exposed the utilitarian nature of the ruling, and many questioned whether FIFA deliberately altered the punishment to please the host nation and ensure the tournament's commercial appeal.
Article 27 was only added to the FIFA Disciplinary Code after 2019, pushed through after Infantino took office. Previously, it had only been used to reduce a suspension for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo during World Cup qualifiers, allowing him to play in this World Cup, but it had never been applied to red card penalties in the World Cup finals.
Belgian coach: Is July 5 April Fools' Day?
After the news broke, the Royal Belgian Football Association immediately issued an official statement strongly refuting it. They claimed that FIFA's ruling under Article 27 directly conflicts with Article 66.4 of the Disciplinary Code and Article 10.5 of the 2026 World Cup Competition Regulations. Both rules explicitly state that a player shown a red card must automatically miss the next match. This rule was repeatedly emphasized to all 32 teams at pre-tournament coordination meetings and in official circulars. Now, FIFA has unilaterally nullified it, severely damaging the rights of all participating teams. The FA is evaluating all legal avenues.
At the pre-match press conference, Belgian coach Garcia and goalkeeper Courtois attended, and both expressed disappointment and anger throughout, voicing the team's doubts and dissatisfaction with FIFA's ruling.
"When I saw this decision, I thought July 5 was European April Fools' Day. I simply can't believe the World Cup would produce such an outcome," Garcia said sarcastically at the start. "The Belgian FA's statement is not to defend ourselves, not for the Belgian national team, but to defend the entire sport of football, its fairness, and its competitive ethics. As far as I know, there has never been such a precedent in World Cup history, which will leave an irreparable negative impact on football."
Garcia then admitted that despite his confusion, as a coach he must focus on preparation: "I am the head coach, and I must concentrate entirely on the team and this match. It doesn't matter who the USA's starting lineup is; we only focus on the pitch and give everything to win and advance to the quarterfinals. But that doesn't mean we agree with this controversial ruling. An imbalance in the rules hurts every team that follows them."
