Pitfall Avoidance Guide: I've Stepped into These 5 Pitfalls So You Don't Have To

1/
Opening your first US stock account seems simple, but pitfalls are everywhere.
From choosing a platform to filling in details, one small mistake can cost you weeks of detours.
This thread explains the 5 most common pitfalls clearly 👇
2/ Pitfall 1: Blindly trusting "lowest commission" ads
Many platforms promote "0 commission" to attract beginners, but note:
• Currency conversion may hide hidden costs
• Some "commission-free" platforms have tricks in data latency and order execution
When choosing a platform, don't just look at commission numbers; consider total costs (exchange rate + platform fees + hidden charges)
3/ Pitfall 2: Mismatch between information filled and supporting documents
Name, address, and identification must match exactly
For example, if your ID card address doesn't match the proof of residence you submit, it will likely be rejected or stuck in review for a long time.
Detail: Overseas brokerages are strict in verifying information authenticity; don't count on luck.
4/ Pitfall 3: Choosing the wrong deposit method, losing money unnecessarily
• Direct bank wire deposits may have intermediary bank fees deducted, reducing the amount received.
• Some channels have opaque exchange rates, silently eating your money.
Before depositing, figure out which currency to deposit is most cost-effective and which channel has the lowest fees.
5/ Pitfall 4: Checking too many permissions when opening the account
When beginners open an account, the system asks if you want to enable options, futures, etc.
Many people check all of them for convenience, resulting in:
• Triggering additional compliance checks, slowing down the account opening process.
• Adding unnecessary complexity to the account.
Suggestion: Only enable stock trading permissions first, and apply separately later if needed.
6/ Pitfall 5: Neglecting the account after opening, leading to a "dormant" account
If you don't deposit or activate promptly after opening, some platforms' accounts will enter an "unactivated" status.
When you need to use it again, you may have to re-verify, wasting time.
Suggestion: Complete the first deposit as soon as possible after opening to keep the account active.
