The Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the United States said that Super Typhoon “Bavi” blew through the U.S. territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific on Sunday with wind speeds of up to 269 kilometers per hour.

Bavi is the second super typhoon to strike the area this year, classified as a Category 5 hurricane. It is expected to pass between the islands of Tinian and Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands, then strengthen again as it continues moving westward, approaching Taiwan around the weekend.

Authorities urged residents of Tinian and Rota to take shelter in sturdy buildings before Bavi passes. U.S. President Trump approved the area to enter an emergency disaster status last Friday.
