China’s Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao and UK Business and Trade Minister Kahl jointly chaired the 15th meeting of the China-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission in London, exchanging in-depth views on trade, investment, and regional and multilateral cooperation. Wang said that China is willing to accelerate the joint feasibility study on a China-UK services trade agreement with the UK, creating favorable conditions to further improve the level of services trade cooperation between the two countries. China welcomes UK enterprises to expand investment in China and hopes that the UK will provide a fair, impartial, and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese enterprises to invest in the UK. Both China and the UK are important members of the WTO, and they should jointly implement the outcomes of the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference. China has serious concerns about the UK steel quota measures that take effect on July 1 and hopes the UK will adjust the measures as soon as possible to ensure they comply with WTO rules. Kahl said that the UK is willing to strengthen policy communication with China, expand cooperation in the services sector through the UK-China Services Partnership and the feasibility study on a China-UK services trade agreement, and welcome Chinese enterprises to invest in the UK while providing more certainty and predictability. The UK is willing to work with China to make good use of the UK-China WTO working group, strengthen policy communication and coordination, and promote positive progress on issues including WTO reform and e-commerce. The two sides spoke highly of the progress of the working groups under the Joint Economic and Trade Commission on areas including investment, services trade, export controls, the WTO, and aviation, and expressed the hope that the working groups will play a greater role in advancing bilateral economic and trade relations.
