India investigates Myanmar camp suspected of forced crypto fraud

CoinGecko News: India has launched an investigation into alleged forced crypto scams at camps in Myanmar. Police registered a criminal case in Maharashtra after a 24-year-old man’s wife reported that her husband was taken to a cyber scam camp on the Myanmar border, instead of the job he was offered in Bangkok. After seeing advertisements on social media offering a graphic design and data entry position with a monthly salary of 70,000 Indian rupees (about $815), the victim traveled to Thailand. Police said that upon arrival, the victim was transferred to a camp on the Myanmar border, and his passport and travel documents were confiscated. Before losing contact, the victim had called his family and said he was forced to work 16 to 18 hours a day, and that anyone who refused orders would face electric shocks and other abuse. Police said the victim claimed that hundreds of Indians were being held in similar camps, although the allegations have not yet been independently verified. The report also mentioned that another resident of Maharashtra was trapped in a similar camp after going to Thailand for what was originally a call center job. The victim said they were forced to carry out online investment and crypto scams in Myanmar, including creating fake social media accounts to lure others into investing.

Pay $815 a month to trick someone into going to Myanmar? This number itself should be a warning.

The case was only filed after the wife reported it; no one took action during the long period of being missing before that?

There are too many high-salary recruitment scams in Southeast Asia. Once they take your passport, you become a slave. Everyone must be very vigilant.
