Mars Finance News, according to Bloomberg, Micron officially broke ground on its factory expansion project in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, on Saturday. The project has a total investment of approximately 1.5 trillion yen (about $9.3 billion) and will be used to produce advanced storage chips for the AI era.

According to reports, the new production line will focus on key chips such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM). These products are core components that support the performance of AI processors such as Nvidia. The relevant chips are expected to begin shipping as early as the summer of 2028.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has provided up to 500 billion yen in subsidies for the project to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and improve supply chain resilience. The expansion project is seen as an important step for Japan to strengthen its semiconductor manufacturing layout in global AI chip competition.
