Malaysian police uncovered an electricity theft mining case in the Port Klang Free Zone, and 2 people were arrested.

According to The Star, at approximately 9:30 a.m. on July 3, police in South Klang, Malaysia, conducted a raid on a warehouse in the Port Klang Free Zone, uncovering a case involving electricity theft for cryptocurrency mining. Police stated that during the operation, a local man and a foreigner were arrested, aged 20 and 31 respectively, and equipment used for cryptocurrency mining on-site was also seized. The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990; the former carries a maximum penalty of 5 years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, while the latter carries a maximum penalty of 5 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to 100k ringgit, or both. The police have obtained a remand order, and the two suspects will be detained for 4 days starting from July 4 until July 7 to assist in further investigations.

Power theft for mining is an old tradition: the electricity cost gets wiped out to zero, and the risk is basically ending up “locked up” for a few years—this ledger is pretty clearly worked out.
