In the World Cup Round of 16 match that kicked off at 2:00 AM Beijing time on July 4, Egyptian defender Hany scored an own goal, "helping" Australia level the score at 1-1. Since then, this World Cup has produced 13 own goals, surpassing 2018 and setting a historic World Cup record. Of course, the 2018 World Cup only had 64 matches, while this edition has so far gone through 86 hard-fought games. What's particularly unfortunate for Hany is that this is his second own goal of the tournament, making him the second player in World Cup history to score two own goals in a single tournament, after Bulgarian player Vutsov in 1966. In the first round of the group stage, facing Lukaku's run to the near post, Hany hurriedly put the ball into his own net, not only allowing Belgium to equalize 1-1 but also ending Belgium's 325-minute goal drought in the World Cup finals.
