Cape Verde’s "Offensive Weakness" — Only 2 Goals in Three Games, Can They Threaten Argentina?

After talking about Cape Verde’s defense, let’s discuss their offense. To be honest, Cape Verde’s attack is really not very good.

In three group stage matches, Cape Verde scored only 2 goals. Zero shots on target against Spain, a passive performance against Uruguay, and despite 51% possession against Saudi Arabia, their attack was lackluster. Over those three games, Cape Verde’s offense basically boiled down to "take a shot if there’s a chance, keep sitting deep if there isn’t."

Cape Verde’s forwards mostly come from lower-tier European leagues, and facing Argentina’s top-tier defense — Romero, Lisandro, Otamendi — it’s hard to get decent shooting opportunities. Argentina conceded only 1 goal in the group stage, so their defensive solidity speaks for itself.

Cape Verde’s only chance comes from set pieces and counter-attacks. Argentina likes to push forward, often advancing their defensive line near the midfield circle. If Cape Verde can seize one counter-attacking opportunity, the possibility of stealing a goal isn’t completely out of the question. But the problem is, how many counter-attacking chances can Cape Verde create in an entire match? Probably fewer than three.

Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is a World Cup-winning keeper with excellent penalty and one-on-one saving ability. Even if Cape Verde somehow gets a clear chance, it’s very hard to beat Big Martín’s hands.
