Tesla VP: Within five years, autonomous driving and humanoid robots will be "fully integrated into everyday life".
Tesla is positioning autonomous driving and humanoid robots as the core of its next stage of growth. Tesla Vehicle Engineering VP Lars Moravy stated that over the next five years, the "Real-World AI" built by Robotaxi, Cybercab, and Optimus will fully integrate into work, transportation, and home scenarios, bringing human society into a "sci-fi movie-like future."
In a July 1 episode of the Brighter with Herbert program, Lars Moravy said that the Cybercab is currently in the testing phase before mass production, with the production line already built and running, automation levels exceeding 90%, and the team continuously optimizing manufacturing processes for scale. He emphasized that the Cybercab was designed from the ground up for scale, and its final output will reach levels that "the outside world has not yet fully understood."
Meanwhile, the Optimus humanoid robot is also accelerating toward mass production. Lars Moravy stated that the first production line has already begun installation, with dozens more to be deployed in the future. Robot manufacturing will fully leverage Tesla's years of accumulated automotive manufacturing capabilities, supply chain systems, and automation experience.
The core message from Lars Moravy is not a single product, but that Tesla is attempting to build a real-world AI system covering factories, roads, homes, and work scenarios, and he believes this system will see concentrated deployment in the coming years.
Five-Year Ultimate Vision: Robotaxi, Cybercab, Optimus Fully Enter the Real World
When asked what achievement of Tesla in five years would most surprise the outside world, Lars Moravy gave a very clear answer.
He said that by then, the scale of real-world AI surrounding people's lives will be "mind-blowing."
In his view, this not only means the proliferation of the Robotaxi network, but also that Cybercab will operate extensively in urban traffic, and Optimus will enter factories, businesses, and even homes. Additionally, the company has more unannounced product plans.
Lars Moravy said that if you look back at the development over the past five years and then look ahead to the next five, he believes people will truly live in a world that only sci-fi movies used to depict.
Cybercab Enters the Sprint Phase for Scale, Focus Extends Beyond Autonomous Driving
Lars Moravy revealed that the Cybercab production line has already been installed and is running. All produced vehicles also serve testing purposes, including autonomous driving model training, vehicle validation, and manufacturing quality optimization.
He said the team has already started burn-in tests on the vehicles. Each vehicle is both a production prototype and a test prototype, with the goal of identifying problems as early as possible before true mass production.
He stated that the biggest feature of Cybercab is not autonomous driving itself, but that the entire product was redesigned from the ground up around cost and scale.
Compared to traditional Robotaxi solutions that simply add a large number of sensors and computing platforms to existing vehicles, Cybercab adopts a brand-new platform design, with re-engineering across manufacturing processes, body structure, battery, wiring harness, and automated production.
Lars Moravy believes this approach will ultimately result in operating costs far below market expectations, while helping Cybercab achieve lower unit cost, higher reliability, better energy efficiency, and lower per-mile operating costs.
He said that the most significant underestimation of Cybercab by the market is not its autonomous driving capabilities, but its manufacturing efficiency and scale capability.
Optimus Begins Building Mass Production System, Automotive Manufacturing Experience Will Be Fully Replicated
On humanoid robots, Lars Moravy revealed that Tesla has started constructing the Optimus mass production system.
He said the first production line has entered the installation phase, with a large amount of automation equipment undergoing final testing before being shipped to the factory for installation. Since robots are much smaller than cars, the entire production line has higher modularity, and installation and commissioning will be significantly faster than automotive production lines.
He said that in the future, about 40 production lines will need to be built to cover the various components and final assembly of the robots.
Lars Moravy believes that Tesla's biggest advantage is not the robot itself, but the mature large-scale manufacturing system it already possesses.
Whether it's supply chain management, automation equipment, production cycle control, or supply chain resilience in the face of unexpected events, all the capabilities accumulated in the automotive business over the past years can be directly replicated to Optimus.
He reiterated that Tesla has three key advantages in the humanoid robot field: large-scale manufacturing capability, high-performance motor and actuator design capability, and real-world AI.
AI Has Already Penetrated Tesla's Factories; Cars Begin to "Check Themselves"
Beyond future products, Lars Moravy also introduced the current practical applications of AI within Tesla.
He said, AI is already widely used for engineering knowledge management, manufacturing anomaly detection, equipment monitoring, and quality control. Different manufacturing systems are also starting to achieve information linkage through AI, rather than just data exchange.
He gave an example: Today, Tesla vehicles can autonomously drive within the factory, traveling from the final assembly line to the logistics area, and they also autonomously drive through noise-testing roads. Using in-vehicle microphones, they identify abnormal noises, vibrations, and other issues, automatically generate diagnostic results, and feed them back to the engineering team. Tesla internally calls this system "Full Self Hearing" (completely autonomous hearing).
Lars Moravy said that AI is helping factories detect problems earlier and locate them faster, while also continuously shortening post-sales repair times and improving overall manufacturing quality.
Manufacturing Capability Remains Tesla's Biggest Competitive Moat
Regarding the competitive advantages that have long been discussed externally, Lars Moravy believes that manufacturing capability remains Tesla's greatest moat.
He stated that at Tesla, design, manufacturing, automation, and supply chain are always part of the same engineering team. There is no separation between product development and manufacturing, as is common in traditional automakers. This highly integrated organizational structure allows the company to quickly iterate products and makes large-scale innovations like Cybercab and Optimus possible.
Lars Moravy said that since 2014, Tesla has been continuously positioning itself around today's autonomous driving and robot strategy. Now, Cybercab and Optimus are just important milestones in that long-term plan gradually being realized. Over the next five years, with the continued deployment of Robotaxi, Cybercab, and Optimus, real-world AI will become an increasingly common part of people's daily lives.
