According to a report by the French National Gendarmerie’s Gendinfo, investigators from the Montpellier UNCyber branch, during an investigation into an online platform facilitating illegal transactions by an organized group—namely, infringement with aggravating circumstances, aggravated money laundering, and improper management—shut down the online download website YGGTORRENT. The website was founded in 2017, had more than 10 million members, and was accused of being one of Europe’s most active infringement platforms. Its revenue came mainly from selling data packages, and its payment methods included bank cards and cryptocurrencies. Investigators said that rights holders suffered losses totaling tens of millions of euros; since the end of 2023, 12 people have been arrested and implicated, including administrators, moderators, quality control personnel, and analysts. During the raid, police seized crypto assets related to the website’s pay, computer equipment valued at 45,000 euros, and discovered more than 50,000 seed files.
