So this is big. Really big.
A coalition of over 140 companies just got together to launch a new stablecoin called Open USD, or OUSD. And the list of names is honestly kind of insane. You have Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, and Coinbase all on board. Also banks like BNY, Standard Chartered, BBVA, and tech platforms like Google and Shopify. It is not just a handful of players, it is basically half the financial world coming together for one project .
What makes this different from USDC or USDT is the structure. Instead of one company keeping all the reserve interest, OUSD is designed to share most of that revenue back to the partner companies after taking out a small management fee . Minting and redeeming are free with no volume caps, which is a big deal for businesses moving money at scale . The governance is also shared, so no single entity controls the whole thing. It is run by an independent company called Open Standard, and the board is made up of the partners themselves .
Stripe is already planning to make OUSD the default stablecoin for businesses on its platform, which alone gives it a massive distribution channel . Coinbase also confirmed it is coming to Base and other chains later this year, with Solana being the first network supported from day one .
The market reaction was immediate. Circle's stock dropped around 17 percent the day the news came out because traders saw this as a direct challenge to USDC's dominance . But honestly, whether OUSD actually takes market share or just expands the whole stablecoin ecosystem is still up for debate. Some analysts think it is more about growing the pie rather than just stealing it from Circle and Tether .
One thing is clear though. This is not just another stablecoin launch. It is a platform war disguised as a token. The incentives, distribution, and governance are all shifting toward a more open, partner-driven model. And with this kind of backing, it is going to be interesting to see how the stablecoin landscape looks a year from now .
