When you see ETH5L or BTC3L on Gate.io, many newcomers get scared. These are called Leveraged Tokens or ETF Tokens.

So what's the difference between them and futures? In futures, you choose your own 125x leverage. As long as the price moves 1% against you, it triggers a liquidation, wiping out all your funds.

But ETH5L is a 5x long token. Here, the exchange manages the leverage itself. So you won't get liquidated. You just buy/sell. There's no funding rate and no margin call.

However, there's an even bigger risk. It's called volatility decay. If the market is in a sideways trend, the price will drop little by little every day. Therefore, ETH5L is only suitable for short-term swing trades of 1-3 days. Not for long-term holding.

Volatility decay is a trap that many people have fallen into—thinking a 5x token is just a leveraged version of spot, only to see half of their principal evaporate after a few days of consolidation. It hurts so much.

Gate’s ETF tokens are indeed worry-free—you don’t have to keep an eye on margin, but you need to figure out the time window. If you don’t get out within three days, you’re basically handing a management fee to the market maker.
