ME AI News, recently, large model domain technical expert Sun Tianxiang officially joined Baidu as the head of the Basic Model R&D Department (BMU). Sun Tianxiang also entered Baidu’s Model Committee (BMC) at the same time. From leading the development of MOSS to proposing MaaS and subsequently his entrepreneurial direction, his academic and industrial path highly aligns with Baidu’s strategic investment in basic models. Han Rui, the first-round investor of Sun Tianxiang’s previous entrepreneurial project Sunjourney, commented, "He is definitely someone with fire in his heart." Earlier, Baidu established the Basic Model R&D Department (BMU) and the Applied Model R&D Department (AMU), with the latter headed by Jia Lei. As a young technical expert in the large model field, Sun Tianxiang was the lead of the ChatGPT-like open-source large model MOSS during his PhD, and he proposed the Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) concept internationally. Sun Tianxiang has published over 40 papers at top AI conferences such as ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, ACL, and NAACL. During his PhD, he interned at Amazon AI Lab, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and other institutions, accumulating rich practical experience ranging from natural language processing to large-scale language model training and engineering. In the past period, Baidu has been continuously iterating its AI organizational structure and talent pipeline: establishing the Baidu Model Committee, introducing young technical talent in multiple batches, and gradually forming a systematic talent layout around basic models.
