July 2 Decisive Matches: England, Belgium, and the USA Chase the Next Round
The Round of 32 in the World Cup is here. There’s no second chance now, the winner moves on, the loser goes home. Three critical matchups will be played on July 2, and all three carry different stories. England doesn’t want a surprise, Belgium is in serious danger, and the USA doesn’t want to slip up in front of its own fans. Let’s break down the three games one by one.
England 🆚 DR Congo: Is the Quality Gap Enough?
On paper, this looks like the clearest game of the day. England’s squad value exceeds 1.2 billion Euros, while DR Congo’s total barely reaches 100 million. But World Cup history has shown over and over that these kinds of matches are not always easy.
Why is England the favorite? Because Southgate has names like Bellingham, Saka, Foden, and Kane. Tempo in midfield, dribbling on the wings, finishing in the box. They have the power to pin DR Congo in their own half for 90 minutes. They’re patient in build-up play, and Stones and Maguire are serious threats on set pieces.
What does DR Congo play for? Physical power and transition play. The trio of Bakambu, Wissa, and Bongonda is quick. England’s fullbacks Trippier and Shaw push forward a lot, leaving space behind them. If England doesn’t score in the first 30 minutes, the game gets stressful. DR Congo’s biggest chance comes from corners and Mbemba’s headers.
My prediction: England 2-0 DR Congo
Bellingham scores one from distance, Kane seals it in the second half. The upset chance doesn’t exceed 15%. England gets through, but if DR Congo makes the game ugly and holds 0-0 until the 70th, everyone’s heart will be in their mouth.
Belgium 🆚 Senegal: The Upset Smell of the Day Is Here
This is the most dangerous matchup of July 2. Belgium looks stronger by name, but Senegal proved to the world in 2022 that they’re a tournament team. Many will call this game a “banker for an upset” and they’d be right.
What’s Belgium’s problem? The golden generation has aged. De Bruyne is still a genius, but he can’t carry the game for 90 minutes every match. Lukaku is a finisher, but his mobility has declined. Doku and Bakayoko are very fast, but lack experience. In defense, Vertonghen is 39 years old, and Faes is error-prone. Belgium keeps the ball but struggles to create in the penalty area. They’re fragile under pressure.
Why is Senegal dangerous? Because of discipline, physicality, and confidence. Cissé’s side suffocates opponents with a 4-1-4-1. Koulibaly leads, Amrabat screens in front, Bono is a wall in goal. In attack, Mané is a big-game player. With Sarr and Jackson, they punish Belgium’s slow center backs in transitions. Also, Koulibaly and Niakhaté always smell a goal on set pieces.
My prediction: Senegal 1-1 Belgium, Senegal advances in extra time
The scenario is clear: Belgium has 70% possession but can’t score. In the 38th, Mané scores on a counter. Belgium equalizes with Lukaku in the 75th. In extra time Senegal stays fresher and Bamba Dieng finishes it in the 112th.
Among these three games, the matchup closest to an upset is absolutely Belgium vs Senegal. Anyone making a betting slip should pay attention.
USA 🆚 Bosnia and Herzegovina: Tempo or Experience?
This could be the most balanced game of the day. The USA is a young team that runs and presses. Bosnia plays on the experience of Dzeko and Pjanic.
USA’s positives: Energy and athleticism. The trio of Pulisic, Weah, and Balogun presses for 90 minutes. McKennie and Musah leave no part of the midfield untouched. When Tyler Adams wins the ball, they go straight on the attack. The crowd support will be with the USA too. Their weak point is finishing. They create a lot of chances but convert few.
What does Bosnia do? Give the ball to the USA and wait for Dzeko. Dzeko is 39 but still a king in the box. Pjanic’s free kicks and Kolasinac’s overlapping runs are threats. The problem is this: if you shut Dzeko down, Bosnia has no Plan B. The defense is slow and can’t keep up with the USA’s pace after the 70th minute.
My prediction: USA 2-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina
Balogun finds the goal in the 17th. Dzeko equalizes with a header in the 41st. In the second half the USA’s tempo takes over and McKennie breaks the game open in the 73rd. Is there a chance for an upset? There is. If Dzeko scores a scramble goal and Pjanic nets a free kick, the game goes to penalties. Still, the USA is 60% closer to advancing.
Day Summary and Upset Candidate
If we sum up the three games, the picture is clear:
1. Most comfortable game: England vs DR Congo. If England doesn’t make mistakes, they take it 2-0. 2. Biggest upset candidate: Belgium vs Senegal. If Senegal goes through, no one should be shocked. 3. Most competitive game: USA vs Bosnia. The tempo difference will decide the result in the last 20 minutes.
If I had to give one answer to “Which game produces an upset?”, I’d say Belgium vs Senegal. Belgium’s aging defense, Senegal’s physical power, and the Mané factor combined could produce a much bigger surprise than DR Congo, either in extra time or penalties.
