Many encounters in life may seem like losses at the time, yet years later, looking back, they might turn out to be gains in another form.
Just like the old man at the frontier losing his horse—it seemed a loss, but it spared him from going to war; when the horse returned, it seemed fortunate, but it led to his son's injury. Gains and losses rarely have clear-cut endings; they are more like the bends of a river—narrow here, wide there.
We often get stuck on immediate gains and losses—a single failure makes us doubt ourselves, a low point makes us think the road ahead is cut off. But fate is especially good at turning things around; where it seems there is no way forward, perhaps a new beginning is hidden. What is called a "dead end" is often the start of a different kind of growth.
True composure is not rushing to judge the present. Losing a job might lead to a new path around the corner; ending a relationship might bring a more complete version of yourself. When you stop measuring life merely by gains and losses, a broader landscape will gradually unfold.
May we all learn the mindset of that old man at the frontier: accept gains with ease, accept losses with calm. Trust that time will give every experience its proper place. All the gains and losses before us are but shadows along the journey. Those who have walked through mountains and rivers will eventually, at some turning point, encounter their own bright future hidden among the willows and flowers.
