Iranian Leader Sends Conditional Message to US: "Reciprocity is Essential"
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that any agreement with the US would only be valid if it was reciprocal. Pezeshkian stated, "If Washington remains faithful to its commitments, we will also remain faithful to ours."
Pezeshkian added that Iran would respond to threats "rationally and honorably," but would defend itself "resolutely and fearlessly" if necessary.
Recent Developments and the Fragile Ceasefire
President Pezeshkian's statements come at a time when the fragile 14-point agreement between the two countries is being tested again, and both sides have ceased mutual attacks.
• Events of last weekend: The US and Iran launched reciprocal attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) struck 10 Iranian military targets in retaliation for an Iranian drone attack on a commercial ship, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missile and drone attacks on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. • Fate of the ceasefire: Following these attacks, the parties agreed to halt military operations. A US official speaking to Axios stated, "We have decided to halt all military operations," while another official indicated that ships can now pass freely through the Strait of Hormuz. • Focus of new talks: The parties are expected to meet in Doha, Qatar, on June 30. The main agenda items will be maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions between the parties. Previously scheduled to take place in Switzerland and expected to address Iran's nuclear program, these talks were postponed due to the recent tensions.
Conflicting Statements from Iran and the US
Messages from both sides regarding the possible talks in Doha are contradictory. US President Donald Trump announced on the social media platform Truth Social that Iran had requested a meeting and that it would take place in Doha on Tuesday.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Bekayi denied Trump's claim, stating that no negotiation meetings at any level with the US were planned for the coming days. Bekayi emphasized that an Iranian expert delegation would travel to Doha this week, but that this visit was solely to review the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed with the US, and not to negotiate with American officials.
These contradictory statements indicate that uncertainty persists regarding the status of the Doha talks and the mutual trust between the parties. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's statements that the Strait of Hormuz is entirely under Tehran's control reveal that disagreements persist between the parties regarding control of the strait, one of the most sensitive clauses of the agreement.
The Significance of Pezeshkian's Message
President Pezeshkian's emphasis on "reciprocity" summarizes Iran's fundamental approach in the current negotiation process. The Tehran administration expects the US to fulfill its obligations under the 14-point agreement (for example, the easing of sanctions on Iran's oil and petrochemical sectors and the release of Iran's frozen assets abroad). Pezeshkian's statements can be interpreted as a sign that Iran will not move forward without seeing these commitments concretely implemented.
At the same time, the emphasis on a "resolute and fearless" defense against threats can be read as part of Iran's deterrence strategy. This reinforces the message that Iran is ready to negotiate at the table but will not back down under pressure.
In summary:
President Pezeshkian's statements reflect Iran's open but conditional approach to dialogue with the US. The reduction of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the permanence of the ceasefire appear to depend on the outcome of the talks expected to be held in Doha in the coming days and the extent to which the parties fulfill their mutual commitments. However, Iran's lack of clear confirmation regarding the Doha talks indicates that the process is still in its early stages and contains significant uncertainties.
