Japan's Ministry of Defense is considering introducing an AI system from a US company.
ME AI News: According to recent reports from Japan, the Japanese Ministry of Defense has confirmed its policy to introduce an artificial intelligence system for “command and control,” and is currently discussing the adoption of military AI systems from U.S. companies. The report says that, according to sources within the government, the Japanese government is currently focusing on introducing the “Maven Intelligent System” from U.S. company Palantir Technologies. However, there has long been a call within the Japanese government and the ruling party to adopt domestically produced artificial intelligence systems. As a result, relevant parties are also considering combining the two approaches, or ultimately replacing them in the future with a Japanese-made artificial intelligence system.
During the Japan-U.S. joint command post exercise held from January to February this year, an AI system from Palantir Technologies was used. However, the specific details of the exercise have not been made public. It is reported that multiple sources within the government have revealed that Japan’s “three security documents,” which the Koichi government plans to revise within the year, will also include provisions on the application of artificial intelligence in command-and-control decision support systems, and that some of the related costs are planned to be included in the budget estimate request for fiscal year 2027.
