Interpersonal relationships have never been one-dimensional; they simultaneously encompass emotional connection, resource exchange, and desire projection. Different relationships are merely different proportions of these three elements. The more stable the resource environment, the more people tend toward explicit rules and value exchange; the more unstable the environment, the more people rely on emotions as a mechanism to reduce uncertainty. So-called "feelings" and "interests" are not opposing forces, but two languages within the same system.
