Sierra cancels coding and algorithm interviews, replacing them with a 2-hour AI-assisted product building.

ME News, April 23 (UTC+8), according to Beating monitoring, AI customer service agent company Sierra has announced a redesigned engineering interview process, eliminating traditional coding interviews and algorithm interviews. The new process consists of three steps: the Plan phase, where candidates lead product ideation; the Build phase, where candidates independently build a product in 2 hours and are free to use any AI tools and frameworks; and the Review phase, where they present their work, discuss technical decisions, data models, and deployment paths. Sierra has also replaced the coding test in the phone screening with a system design interview, reasoning that building applications with AI is already easy, while making them production-ready at scale is harder and more important. The team is also piloting a debugging interview: giving candidates a medium-sized codebase and a draft PR introducing cross-cutting features, asking them to review and improve it. Sierra says the new process shifts the evaluation focus from "should we hire this person" to "where is this person strongest and how can we best match them to a position." Candidate feedback has been generally positive, with one person using AI to build an adaptive difficulty quiz game, and the demo session being the interviewer playing it directly.
