OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Clinicians, free for U.S. clinicians.

ME News reports that on April 23 (UTC+8), according to Beating monitoring, OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Clinicians, a version of ChatGPT designed for clinical work scenarios, available free of charge to verified physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and pharmacists in the United States.

This version provides cutting-edge models to handle clinical questions and introduces a Skills feature that allows common workflows such as referral letters and prior authorizations to be saved as reusable templates. The clinical search function references peer-reviewed literature in real time and attributes sources, while the deep research mode can autonomously complete medical literature reviews. When users search for clinical questions in ChatGPT, eligible literature searches are automatically counted toward Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. HIPAA compliance is optionally enabled through a Business Associate Agreement (BAA), and conversations are not used for model training.

Before the launch, OpenAI’s physician advisors tested 6,924 conversations in their daily work, with 99.6% of responses rated as safe and accurate. In a citation test of 355 samples, ChatGPT for Clinicians cited standard sources more frequently than human physicians.

OpenAI also simultaneously released the HealthBench Professional open benchmark, covering three types of clinical tasks: nursing consultation, document writing, and medical research. GPT-5.4 achieved an overall score of 59.0 in the ChatGPT for Clinicians environment, outperforming basic GPT-5.4's 48.1, Claude Opus 4.7's 47.0, Gemini 3.1 Pro's 43.8, the 43.7 score for written responses from human physicians, and Grok 4.2's 36.1.
