Altman asserts that the world will face a computing power shortage, OpenAI introduces 1-3 year computing power long-term contracts with discounts.

AIMPACT News, May 20 (UTC+8), according to Dongcha Beating monitoring, the competition among large models is evolving into a direct scramble for underlying physical computing power. OpenAI has launched a “compute guarantee” service: companies can lock in access rights to computing power by committing to 1 to 3 years of spending, and receive tiered token discounts based on the committed amount. CEO Sam Altman warned that as large models become increasingly powerful, global computing power will remain constrained in the long run. When the question of money comes to the forefront, this long-term contract is essentially a two-way win: companies spend money to lock in stable computing power for AI agents and production systems, while OpenAI obtains funds in advance and can plan and expand next-generation infrastructure more reliably. This plan also has a clear physical cap on its quota. Sam Altman stated explicitly that once the currently allocated quota is sold out, it will stop, and enough underlying compute must be reserved to prioritize the normal operation of core proprietary products such as ChatGPT and Codex.
