AIMPACT News, May 20 (UTC+8), according to Beating monitoring, on May 19, former Tesla Autopilot director and OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy announced on X platform that he has officially joined frontier AI lab Anthropic, returning to the front line of R&D, nearly a year and a half after he left OpenAI again in February last year. This high-profile return was not without warning; his deep motivations were publicly revealed as early as two months ago. In an interview on the No Priors podcast released on March 20, Karpathy admitted that he felt nervous about being outside the frontier labs, because the black-box barriers erected by closed-source giants are causing external researchers' technical intuition and judgment to inevitably drift. At that time, he revealed that he is extremely wary of being completely controlled by a single closed-source entity and is inherently skeptical of centralized power. The reason is simple: he absolutely does not want the world's intelligence to be monopolized by two or three giants behind closed doors. Therefore, in the podcast, Karpathy described an ideal "on-loan" state—working at a frontier lab for a period of time to stay connected to the latest technology without completely losing independence.
