Google Fired the Author of Workspace CLI, Sparking a Backlash from the Open-Source Community

ME AI News, according to Dazhan Beating Monitoring, this March, Google developer relations engineer Justin Poehnelt open-sourced the command-line tool googleworkspace/cli (i.e., gws) on GitHub. gws became a sensation on Hacker News, topping the front page and earning thousands of stars. Addy Osmani, Google Cloud’s AI director, posted about it to promote it, and a Google insider also asked him about his development experience. Soon after, Google’s legal department stepped in to question him, accusing Poehnelt of using Google’s logo and color scheme in an unofficial support repository. In April, two days after Google announced it would roll out an official Workspace CLI, Poehnelt was officially dismissed. On June 24, Poehnelt revealed the details of his dismissal on X, saying the root cause was the Workspace team’s fear that they would be overturned by AI agents. Peter Steinberger, founder of OpenClaw, reposted in support, mocking Google for “burning the bridge after crossing it” and saying he was glad Google couldn’t fire him.
