UN Secretary-General urges AI companies to disclose environmental impact

ME AI News, as Europe experiences a severe heatwave, UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls on artificial intelligence companies to disclose the environmental impact of their technologies and to rapidly shift toward carbon-neutral operations. He cites a recent United Nations study indicating that by 2025, the electricity consumed by data centers supporting AI and other digital services will surpass that of all but about ten countries, highlighting the increasing climate impact of the industry. Guterres warns that without active decarbonization, the energy demands related to AI and associated greenhouse gas emissions could undermine global climate goals and exacerbate extreme weather events already affecting millions. He urges governments and industries to adopt stricter reporting standards, accelerate investments in renewable energy for data centers, and ensure that the benefits of AI are not achieved at the expense of climate stability.
