ME News Report, June 24 (UTC+8), a large-scale field study covering 3.4 million people, 4 million applications, 150 employers, and 1,700 positions found significant racial bias in AI recruiting screening tools: 26% of Black applicants and 15% of Asian applicants experienced systemic exclusion by the algorithm based on their ethnicity; if AI operated according to the highest recommendation rate group (usually White), an additional 40k applications would advance to the next round. Most employers rely on the same third-party vendor’s algorithm, creating an "algorithm monoculture," resulting in 10% of applicants who submitted 4 applications being rejected by all positions. In comparison, recruitment data from the same period without AI (83k applications, 108 Fortune 500 companies) showed no such pattern.
