CoinWorld News reports that, according to HK01, Hong Kong police have cracked a cross-border money laundering case.
The involved group used 43 Hong Kong bank accounts from June to September 2024 to handle 34 scam cases, defrauding 18 million HKD, and used cryptocurrency transactions to launder 230 million HKD of criminal proceeds.
A 34-year-old woman from Mainland China opened puppet accounts to assist in laundering 9.29 million HKD of criminal gains and purchased cryptocurrencies through virtual asset exchange shops, resulting in a 47.5-month prison sentence.
Hong Kong police remind that assisting criminal groups with fund handling can face up to 10 years in prison, and money laundering charges can carry fines up to 5 million HKD and 14 years of imprisonment.
