Vitalik Buterin Challenges AI to Reveal His Anonymous Ethereum Work

Abstract generation in progress
CryptoWorld News reports that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has challenged internet users to identify an anonymous Ethereum document he authored early in this decade. He states that this challenge turns the privacy debate into a public test of AI text analysis. Buterin believes that AI text analysis could make online anonymity difficult to maintain. He describes the document as of moderate importance and estimates that approximately 200 to 2,000 Ethereum documents are equally or more important. He adds that it is unclear how difficult it will be to find this document. The test focuses on stylometry, a method that compares writing style, word choice, and structure to link texts to their authors. Buterin’s extensive public writing record, including blog posts, research notes, Ethereum discussions, social media posts, and technical comments, provides more material for AI tools to compare. To date, there has been no publicly confirmed successful identification of the document, making the experiment’s results difficult to assess. Buterin has also recently focused on AI safety and privacy, calling for a locally prioritized AI approach and warning that cloud-based tools may expose user data, risking leaks, manipulation, and misconduct.

Prioritizing local AI is indeed important; cloud-based tools are convenient to use but pose a significant risk of data leaks. Vitalik's reminder was timely.
