Why do we always feel that good people get the short end of the stick and bad people take advantage? Because we often only see the process of dominant competitors bullying others, but we don't see the battles and costs they incur. Game theory has found that after a group evolves over a long period, pure plundering and pure retreating cannot be the optimal strategies; ultimately, a balance of competition and cooperation will form. The ones who truly achieve the highest long-term benefits are not the nice guys or the villains, but those willing to cooperate while retaining the ability to retaliate.
