ME News message: On April 22 (UTC+8), according to Beating Monitoring, Altman detailed in the Core Memory podcast the early negotiation process with Elon Musk. He said that four key members—himself, Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and Musk—agreed that OpenAI needed to transition into a for-profit company.

The negotiations came close to reaching an agreement: Musk demanded majority equity, and they made concessions. Musk then demanded that the CEO “let everyone know who’s in charge,” and they also agreed. However, Musk ultimately demanded “absolute control over OpenAI,” which became the breaking point. Altman’s quote: “There shouldn’t be one person who controls the entire future, no matter who that person is.”

Altman said that this version “has never been disclosed to the public for years,” and that the lawsuit about to go to trial “leaves us with no choice.” He viewed the court session as “an opportunity to tell the story,” while also worrying that Musk might withdraw the case before the hearing—“then we won’t have a chance to explain all of this clearly.” The lawsuit between both sides is scheduled to be heard on April 27, and Musk is seeking damages of $79.0B to $134.0B.
